The creative expressions of both local and international animators took centre stage last evening as Animae Caribe, the Caribbean's only Animation and New Media Festival, celebrated its 10th Anniversary opening by offering a preview of some of the most outstanding animations received over the years. Supported by the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company, the Trinidad and Tobago Entertainment Company, the University of Trinidad and Tobago, E-teck and the Advertising Agencies Association of Trinidad and Tobago, the Opening Ceremony, held at the National Academy for the Performing Arts in Port of Spain, allowed guests to be fully immersed in the animated shorts featured thanks to a state-of-the-art jumbo screen at the facility. These animations were but a small sample of what is to come at the nightly screenings where more outstanding work received over the 10 years of the Festival will be on display. Animae Caribe runs until November 5th. Read Full Press Release 2011 Animae Caribe Animation FestivalDirector's NoteThis 10th edition of Animae Caribe Animation Festival is evidence of the resolve and creative genius of the people of the Caribbean. We have seen an evolution in this art from ten years ago as a small but very exciting gathering and exchange of animation ideas, screenings and workhops, to this 2011 edition of award winning animators, screenings and groundbreaking workshops. However most dear to my heart in this edition is the screening of '10 Years of Caribbean Animation'. Here festival guests will see the naivety of our first years and its transition now into ingenuous animations. This year we will celebrate world animation again, Japanese, Cuban, African as the festival continues to be a true platform for developing countries that are new to animation. At the same time we encourage submissions from around the globe. Though we still have a long way to go to compete with the world; ten years ago we made the first step. Those first steps have now given fruit to University programmes in animation, animation associations in several islands, a reverse brain drain in this sector with more and more successful animators working outside the region actually giving back, through training or support and the recently formed ASIFA Caribbean Chapter a world renown animation association with its main headquarters in Hollywood. It is with great pride and gratitude that I say welcome to our tenth edition of Animae Caribe Animation Festival. Festival Director Camille Selvon Abrahams
